The Blood Sucking Vampire Bat

A lot of folks have different notions about bats, some believe that bats are generally dreadful, blood thirsty creatures looking for humans to devour, for some others, solitary nocturnal animals and in some parts of Africa bats are believed to be creatures with certain 'demonic powers' (weird huh!)
The truth is, there are different bats species, most of which feed basically on insects and fruits, but some other species which belong to the group of 'Vampire bats' feed on blood, bats are all nocturnal in nature.
The most common Vampire bat is found in South America, it is usually killed by farmers because it attacks their cattle and can transmit rabies, there have also been records of vampire bats feeding on the blood of human beings while they are asleep, they bite the skin with their sharp teeth and in the process of sucking blood, secrete certain chemicals to keep the blood from clotting while they feed, without the victim even noticing.

Former National President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor has called on President Goodluck Jonathan and other elected and appointed public office holders to dedicate half of their salaries for one year to the poor.

Popes John XXIII and John Paul II to be Declared Saints In April 2014

For the Catholic faithfuls, CNN reports that Popes John XXIII and John Paul II will be declared saints in April, the Vatican said Monday.

The announcement came after Pope Francis met with cardinals to discuss the planned canonizations of two of his predecessors. The ceremony will take place on April 27.

It will be the first time two popes will be canonized at the same time.

To be named a saint involves a series of steps, but the qualifications are straightforward, according to the veteran Vatican analyst John Allen.

UNAIDS: HIV infection rate down by 33 percent worldwide since 2001.

The global rate of new HIV infections among adults and children has fallen by 33 percent since 2001, according to a new report that touts major progress against HIV transmission to kids.
Among children specifically, there were 260,000 new infections as of 2012, which is a 52 percent decrease since 2001. Sixty-two percent of pregnant women were provided antiretroviral drugs, which greatly helps in preventing the transmission of the virus to their unborn children. AIDS-related deaths have also dropped 30 percent since 2005, when the highest mortality rates were recorded.
The statistics were published by UNAIDS in a global report on the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
Still, the UNAIDS report revealed that an estimated 35.3 million people were living with HIV around the world in 2012. About 2.3 million got infected that year, and 1.6 million people died due to AIDS-related illnesses...[read more]
