Highlights of The Presidential Media Chat.

 President Goodluck Jonathan spoke on important issues tonight,while responding to questions asked by some very brilliant journalists, he gave some clarity on certain issues that have been on the minds of people. Here is a summary of topics that were discussed and what he had to say on them...


    • The Ongoing ASUU strike: The President called on the lecturers to be more considerate and call off the strike in the interest of the Students and indeed the Nation, saying that the government was committed to improving the state of infrastructure in the universities and has shown their commitment through the release of the N100billion intervention fund adding that a special team was sent to the respective Universities to bring reports about the state of infrastructure in the campuses nationwide. He also added that the State University lecturers had no business partaking in the ongoing strike action, reasons being that the State Universities are owned by the 'autonomous' State Governments and should be solely funded by it. The President declined to respond when asked about the strike being influenced by his political opponents, jokingly, saying, 'there's politics involved in everything'.
    • Insecurity: He condemned the recent killing of students of The College Of Agriculture, Gujba,Yobe and when asked about how prepared the Nation's security operatives were referring to the recent Kenya Shopping Mall attack, he assured Nigerians of their safety when in public places. He also said that may have been loss of innocent lives after the State of  Emergency was declared in states distressed by the Boko Haram insurgents, in an attempt by men of the armed forces to restore peace in the affected areas but that some of the Boko Haram terrorists were dealt with.
    • Intention to run for A Second Term:President Jonathan said he never signed any formal agreement not to contest in the 2015 elections or made any such statement. Responding to a question about if he was interested in running for a second term, the president said it was illegal to declare publicly his intention right now and that were no 'billboards or flyers' in circulation for a 2015 campaign.
    • President Jonathan debunked rumors making the rounds that the Nation was 'bankrupt', adding that Nigeria with its huge population provides a great atmosphere for foreign investments.
    • Privatization of The Power Sector: He said the process was near completion and likened it to the Transformation of the Telecommunications sector, saying it was a welcome development.
